Somewhere out there #3 – How to generate electricity in space?

After surviving the lack of air, you found yourself in an entirely dark space. To change that, we added a window to our new home in space. You notice that it’s still quite dark while drifting around in there. Let’s address that and see what else comes up in this episode of Somewhere out there.

While floating around your new home, you notice that it’s still quite dark in there. The window allows for sunlight, but the Sun is far away. It’s barely enough to see something at the far ends of your steel can.

Some lights would be great, you think, but lights need electricity. So, how can you generate electricity in space? There’s no outlet you can simply plug the lights in. You’ll need a generator. What about the ones used on Earth?

There are those who burn coal, oil, gas, or other things. But burning something where you are, isn’t a good idea. What about nuclear fission? That isn’t easy to handle, and it requires water as well. Thinking about water, you also notice, you’re a bit thirsty. But we have to take care of that one later.

What else comes to your mind, how can you generate electricity? Deep in your thoughts, you come close to the wall opposite the window. As you bump into it, a shock runs through your hole body.

The wall is cold, more like freezing. You’re lucky you don’t stick to it, instead you already float off in the opposite direction. Some heating or insulation would be great, you think.

What about renewable energy sources? Wind will not work, just because there is no wind. But you have the Sun. Although it’s far away, its light reaches your place. So, let’s stick some solar panels on the outside, facing in the direction of the Sun. This should be quite a bit more than you would use on Earth.

Alright, you have electricity in space, which provides energy for light and a heater. So, everything’s fine, isn’t it? Well, there is the thirst and the heat isn’t quite getting where you want it. But those problems will have to wait for the next part of the story.
